Scope 2 Accounting Calculator:
Impact & Hourly Matching
What do the Scope 2 revisions mean for your renewable usage claims?
The GHGP has proposed new guidelines for the Scope 2 Market-Based Method and a Consequential Metric. Many are wondering how these new rules will impact their current reporting claims and how these new goalposts might translate into procurement strategies, costs, and administrative efforts. This calculator gives a high level view into how each accounting methodology might look for your current or planned procurement strategy.
This calculator is available for the following regions: US, Europe, India and Australia.
Hourly matching method
The hourly matching method, as currently proposed for the MBM by the GHGP, is focused on matching by generation. It requires load usage to be matched with the same number of MWh from clean power procurement in each hour. Users must provide load usage, annual SSS percentages, load profiles, and clean power generation by region. The current proposal suggests three options for exemption: 5, 10, and 50 GWh / year / region. Users may select each option within this tool to see how each threshold would impact their matching status. Exempt regions must still match, but annually.
Consequential (Impact) Accounting method
The impact method is focused on measuring and matching impact by carbon. This means that the net carbon impact from load usage and procurement is calculated annually, based on the emission impact rates of each location. Users must provide load usage and clean power generation by region.
